BEST REMEDIES TO FIGHT HUNGER IN KENYA.
Kenya is currently facing food shortage leading to suffering of about 6.5 million more so in dry areas such as North Eastern part of the country.With increased standards of living,many Kenyans have found it hard to cope with high costs of food prices.It is undebatable that agriculture is the back bone to economy of our country.
The government should therefore come up with better strategies to curb this menace threatening to take not only lives of people but also livestock. Some of the activities the government should take include the following:
1.Providing fertilisers
The government has the responsibility to provide cheap fertilisers to farmers which will make them affordable.The supply should be in time to give farmers enough time even before planting.
2.provision of certified seeds.
The supply of certified seeds will not only improve germination potential but also increase production at the end.The seeds should be at a cheap price for affordability.
3.Provision of market for agricultural produce.
The farmers have gone a lot of losses due to lack of market for their produce.Others have been forced to sell at throw away prices.The government should ensure ready market to control such losses.It should purchase the produce at better prices to give the farmers morale of even working harder.
4.Educating farmers.
Many farmers lack enough basic skills required in agricultural production.The government in colaboration with agricultural experts should educate farmers on best crops,spacing,weed control among other activities.
5.Carrying research.
The government has a responsibility to colaborate with meteorological departments to know the climate patterns.This will help the farmers to know the best type of crops to plant depending on rain availability.
The farmers on there side have their responsibilities to put into account.They include:
1.Soil conservation
The farmers should ensure their farms are in good condition.They can do so by controlling soil erosion.Terracing their farms is the best way to control erosion.
2 .Early planting
They should plant their crops in time to ensure early germination and maturity. This will make use of the available rain.
3.Weed and pest control.
Crops need space to establish and grow faster.This can be done through weeding.Weeding.Weeding reduces competition for nutrients hence increasing production.Pest control not only increases quality but also Quantity.
4.Proper storage.
Farmers have incurred heavy loses by their produce going bad.They should ensure the produce are well stored and if need be get market in shortest time possible.
Agriculture is the back bone to economy but if strategies are not going to be put in place,the backbone will weaken resulting to even more hunger and suffering.
